I would suggest starting a lawn care business. It's extraordinary the demand for responsible lawn care services in the suburban Dallas area. Better yet, the initial start-up fees are minimal--all you really need is a lawn mower, some fertilizer, and a positive attitude. As for the possibility of getting shot or assaulted with a deadline weapon, it's anybody's guess when or where that will happen. When it's your time to go, it's your time to go. But for safety purposes, I would conduct your business in a respectable neighborhood, one that is free of prostitution, drug lords, gangs, and drive-bys.
